Maputo

Whether you know it as Baia das Lagoa or Delagoa Bay or LM or Lourenzo Marques or Maputo or even if you don’t know it at all, Maputo as it’s now known will surely fascinate you. With it’s origins dating back to 1502 it has had a turbulent history. The Portuguese first started trading here in 1545 and soon after other nations also started to trade in the bay. In 1720 the Dutch East India Company sent an expedition to open a permanent trading station in the bay. In 1776 the English also tried establishing a permanent trading station there but as before, the mosquitoes, in the form of Malaria defeated them! Then in 1782 the Portuguese tried again but were turned back by the English. In 1796 the French got involved and destroyed the English settlement (because the English and Napoleon were at it hammer and tongs) and in 1799 the persistent Portuguese came back!! And that’s just the beginning. What happened between 1800 and to date is to be seen in the city. Want to know more and relive the past and savor the present? Join Drive The Big 5 on a fascinating 1 day city tour of this vibrant, cosmopolitan, unmistakably Portuguese yet very African City.

Depending on where we pick up your guests, a typical Drive The Big 5 1 day Maputo City Tour itinerary follows the basic itinerary outlined below. The following times are based as Malelane being the departure point so add on time if your lodge/hotel is not in the Malelane area.

Pick-up from the hotel/lodge would be at 08h00. From Malelane to the border is 50 kms. We should be at the border at about 08h30 or 09h00.

The only real variable is the time it takes to dispense with the border formalities. If it's quiet, about 15 minutes, if we are behind a Vaal Maseru Bus! ??? Allow 45 minutes.

From the border to Maputo is 100 kms or 1 hour. We should get to Maputo at about 10h00 or 11h00 the latest

On arrival in the City we will have coffee at one of the sidewalk coffee shops in down town Maputo. After coffee we will commence with the city tour of Maputo. The route will take us down Ave. Julius Nyerere, past the 5 star historic Polana Hotel and all the Embassies belonging to the various countries and then along the beach front on Avenda Da Marginal to the area known as The Baixa or downtown Maputo. We will then visit the imposing Concelho Municipal (Municipal Buildings), the Casa de Ferro "house of iron" which was designed by Gustav Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame and which was shipped out from Belgium in a CKD form (Completely Knocked Down) and assembled on site. We will then visit the Catholic Cathedral and the Botanical Gardens before going into the Louis Trichardt Trek Memorial Garden.  We will then visit the Mercado Municipal (Municipal Market) in which you could loose yourself for an hour, but beware of pick-pockets!! We then continue onto the beautiful C.F.M. Railway Station which was built in 1900 and down the Rua do Bagamoio which is better known as the "Street of Sin" because of all the clubs and pubs which only come alive after 22h00 each night and then onto the oldest standing building in Maputo, the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao which was built in 1781.  We then board the ferry to Catembe. This is a 10 minute boat ride with the locals, sheep, chickens and anything else they might be carrying, to the opposite side of Maputo Harbour. This is an experience in itself and should not be missed. But please be warned that the ferry is not guaranteed and could be cancelled for no apparent reason. Once at Catembe there are magnificent views of the City of Maputo. Lunch will be taken at the Hotel at Catembe and this is your chance to savour the cuisine that Maputo is world renowned for, "LM" prawns, crab, calamari, mussels and peri peri chicken all washed down with a bottle of "green" Portuguese wine or a "2M" or two. After lunch, we return to the ferry and cross back to Maputo where our tour will continue back along Avenda Da Marginal to the famous Praia da Costa Do Sol. Here we will stop for "desert" and coffee before visiting the fresh fish market and returning to the border and South Africa and onto your hotel/lodge. We should be back in Malelane at about 19h00 after an exciting and most interesting day.

Should the ferry to Catembe not be running or we run into time restraints, lunch will be taken at Costa do Sol instead of at the hotel in Catembe.
