Whether you know it as Baia das Lagoa or Delagoa Bay or LM or Lourenzo Marques or Maputo or even if you don’t know it at all, Maputo as it’s now known will surely fascinate you. With it’s origins dating back to 1502 it has had a turbulent history. The Portuguese first started trading here in 1545 and soon after other nations also started to trade in the bay. In 1720 the Dutch East India Company sent an expedition to open a permanent trading station in the bay. In 1776 the English also tried establishing a permanent trading station there but as before, the mosquitoes, in the form of Malaria defeated them! Then in 1782 the Portuguese tried again but were turned back by the English. In 1796 the French got involved and destroyed the English settlement (because the English and Napoleon were at it hammer and tongs) and in 1799 the persistent Portuguese came back!! And that’s just the beginning. What happened between 1800 and to date is to be seen in the city. Want to know more and relive the past and savor the present?
